xx Deadly House Fire at 11320 Slade Road in Ridgeway
01/18/08 at 10:15AM by Admin
**This information was submitted by a visitor**

Orleans County Firefighters are investigating a house fire that killed four people in the town of Ridgeway.

The fire broke out in the back of the home on Slade Road just before midnight.

The Orleans County Sheriff's Department has identified the victims as Anna Monagan, 56, her daughter April Hausler, 31, and her children, James Hausler, 10, and Dawn Hausler, 7.

April's father, James Monagan, 57, was taken to the Erie County Medical Center with serious burns. James grandson, Donald Monagan, 14, also survived the fire and tried to save his family.

"He is the only one who woke up,” said Fred Oliver, a family friend. “He got his grandfather out; his grandfather's hair is burned off and everything, but he got his grandfather out and then he couldn't go back in and then my son-in-law couldn't get in, the heat was so intense it drove him back and all they could do it stand by and feel bad."

Dave Hausler, husband and father of the victims, was on his truck route in Ohio when the fire happened. Authorities waited until he returned home to tell him of the tragedy.

Investigators do not yet know the cause of the fire.

A family spokesperson says the family lived paycheck to paycheck and that Dave Hausler cannot afford to pay for four funerals. Family and friends have set up a fund to help. Contributions can be sent in the Monagan-Hausler name to any western New York branch of First Niagara Bank.

xx Holley Keeps Its Police Dept
12/07/07 at 03:58PM by H241
Holley voters made a statement about their police department Thursday,

By a 276-120 count, village residents voted to keep the police department.

Opponents of the department believed the village would save taxpayers money by shuttering the police department. Talk began earlier this decade with controversy involving a police chief accused of drug charges.

The embattled police force was challenged by citizens who questioned the need for it. That evolved into a two-year effort to force a vote on the police department. The debate ended Thursday.
